Dominic Purcell was born in Wallasey, Wirral. At the age of two Purcell and his family moved from England to Bondi, New South Wales, Australia and later to the Western Suburbs. He is of Irish and Norwegian descent. Purcell attended Blaxland East Public School, and later studied at Blaxland High School and St Dominic's College, Penrith. After becoming a landscape gardener he soon tired of the profession and, while watching the war film Platoon, decided to become an actor.
He later attended the Australian Theatre for Young People and then enrolled at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts where he met his future wife, Rebecca Williamson, and studied with Hugh Jackman.[citation needed] With his wife he has a son Joseph (b. August 12, 1999), a daughter Audrey (b. January 30, 2001), and twins Lily-Rose and Augustus (b. July 7, 2003).
